We tried to leave earlier this morning but we always seem to start hiking around 7am. The trail in segment three was beautiful. We passed a pile of old bed springs sitting on the side of the trail. We looked around but did not see any evidence of a homestead or a road. Another mystery to ponder while walking along the trail.
We passed a few rocks embedded in the ground that looked like giant turtles. They looked so realistic.
This was the start of the massive mushrooms, a huge variety of big and little, brown, yellow, red, even green ones. We entered a forest that if I didn't know better, looked exactly like a Pacific Northwest forest. I felt right at home. Whizzing right along, I almost missed a hanging blue star on one of the trees. It said, "Make A Wish, Colorado, I wish to meet the Colorado Avalanche", followed by the name Brian, age 17, tumor. Dang, I hope Brian got his wish.
We stopped for lunch and I watched as Linda methodically stacked her cheese and crackers on top of each other. She does this every day and I get a kick of seeing the stack every day.
We were ready to fill up with water and hunted for the best area on this tiny stream we were near. All of a sudden, the ground had all these holes everywhere. Snake holes? Gopher holes? Chimpmonk holes? We never found out as whatever created them didn't stick their heads out and greet us. We had to scoop for water and filter into our bottles.
We finished up segment 3 and as we started segment 4, there was a trailhead with a few cars parked, and leaning against a tree was a single snow ski. Son of a gun. What a sight.
We entered the Lost Creek Wilderness and mountain bikers are not allowed on this section. We followed a logging road lined with tall aspen trees and the road went up, up, up. It became very rocky. With the sun beaming its hot rays down on us, it was quite the miserable uphill. We finally crossed the headwaters of Craig Creek and found a large campground where we stayed the night. We were beat.
