It was another chilly morning and tough to get out of the tent. We had a nice long uphill of 1,200 ft before it leveled out. That gets the heart going early in the morning. Once we made over to the other side of the ridge, we discovered that we had cell service (that's why you got a report on yesterday's adventures). Our goal today was 17.2 miles and boy was it a tough one. We may have been tired from the big mileage day yesterday, or it was simply all the ups and downs we had to do. Mid morning we crossed the 100 mile marker (yay!), only 400 more miles to go.
Decided to eat lunch at a tiny stream and discovered a film crew making a commercial for the Breck's Distillery in Breckenridge. It was fun to watch the two mountain bikers and their two dogs (Kevin and Lucy) zoom back and forth for multiple takes. Kevin decided to bring his ball over and dropped his wet, slimey ball in my lap. I was pretty dirty anyway so I threw the ball for him a couple of times. He was supposed to be paying attention to the filming activity but fetching ball was more fun!
After lunch it got pretty hot and the umbrella came into play once more. We dropped down into a suburb of Breckenridge and had a short visit with a retired couple who lives there. They don't have much respect for the mountain bikers or the runners as they have been almost bowled over on their walks on the trail.
We stopped at the first creek and wet our hair. It helps for a bit until the sun and wind dry it out. We decided to continue for another 4.5 miles. The trail is routed under the freeway bridge and popped us out on the other side. Then it was the longest uphill 4.5 miles so far. We were dragging from the sun and heat. It seemed to take forever. Bikers passed us both ways. Finally found our campsite for the night. Final miles for the day - 17.4. We are whipped...
