Happy 4th of July! Seasoned Strider and Pebbles had prepared their packs last night and left this morning at 5am for the trek up Whitney. I spent a quiet day organizing, rinsing hair, backwashing my water filter, mending my possum down gloves, reading my book, and trying to stay out of the sun.
My tent is made out of Dyneema fabric and although it makes for a very light tent, it also causes it to be a very hot interior in the sun. I draped my quilt over the top to create a little shade. We were above treeline so no shade to be had anywhere. I did spend some time reading under my umbrella (boy, that thing is handy) but one can only sit on a hard rock scrunched under an umbrella for so long.
Thru and section hikers started to roll in about 2pm to make camp and prepare their own journeys to the top of Whitney tomorrow. Seasoned Strider and Pebbles arrived back in camp at 3:09pm.
Seasoned Strider stopped 1.4 miles from the top, intensely disliking the super steep chutes one had to pass on the way to the top. Pebbles continued on and arrived at the top without mishap. She also said the chutes got worse the further she went. It was also super cold on the top.
