A shower! Real food! Clean clothes! These thoughts were continually running through our minds as we packed up and headed for VVR (Vermilion Valley Resort). It's a rustic place with four rooms (complete with shower), trailers, and a yurt for rent. There was a two night minimum which was okay with us since we wanted a zero day to rest the weary bodies and minds. After a 1,200 ft elevation gain, we turned off on the Bear Ridge Trail which lead downhill for 2,189 ft and deposited us at the end of the dam. We stood and stared at the big huge sign on the closed locked gate that said "Do Not Enter", and then stared at the long gravel road on top of the dam that led straight to VVR, two miles ahead. Looking at the Guthooks app (our navigation app), it showed that we were to detour around the dam with extra mileage. Huh. What would YOU do? Here's what WE did - we jumped that gate with nary a third thought and powered our way forward with total focus on food and showers. Finally arrived at VVR, put on our masks, and strode right on in. Our rooms wouldn't be ready until 2pm but lunch was being served! Hamburgers and salads for all. VVR offers a free beer for hikers and that went well with the burgers. Room finally ready and after 18 days without a shower, boy, did that shower feel good! We thought we had tans but most of it washed down the drain...
